St. Martin of Tours church faces Weirfield Street and Irving Square. Knickerbocker Avenue with the parish school is at the right. Most hours, the church gates are padlocked. The inscription above the pillars reads, "Ecclesia Sancti Martini Turonensis." St. Martin lived from about 316 to 397. Martin was bishop of the diocese of Tours, France. He did not get along well with St. Brice, who succeeded him.
The rectory is at 1288 Hancock Street, Brooklyn, NY 11221, just south of Knickerbocker Avenue. The phone number is 718-443-8484. This parish includes the closed parish of Fourteen Holy Martyrs. The rectory also serves as rectory for the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Above is the former parish school at 751 Knickerbocker Avenue. Some years ago, the school was renamed St. Elizabeth Seton Parish School. In early 2009, Bishop DiMarzio threatened to close the school, but later allowed it to accept new students. The Brooklyn Tablet of 5.5.2010 announced that the school, with an enrollment of 180, would close in June, 2010.

DeleteHi Nancy...I went to St John’s then med school in Syracuse. Trained in Chapel Hill and have been in South Carolina for 35 years. Still working full time as an anesthesiologist specializing in cardiac cases. Nice to hear from you.

ReplyDeleteHello ~ I entered St. Martin of Tours School (for Kindergarten) in 1948 and my teacher was the terrifying (for me) Sister Catherine Anita - who would curl her tongue as she attacked. 1A was the ethereal Sister Frances Borgia - who I LOVED - and the following grades up through Grade 4 included (the VERY tall) Sister St. Amedeus and Miss Wisenfeld. Also, there was the VERY kind Mr. Fox who was the custodian and Friend to all. My family then moved to Bethpage, Long Island where there was no local Catholic school until my youngest sister was of school age (in 1955)and she entered (another) St. Martin of Tours and stayed until she graduated from the 8th grade. Recently I returned to the streets of Bushwick because like half the world, I am doing genealogical research - and was SHOCKED that MY Catholic grammar school - across the street from the church where my parents married, where I and my siblings were all baptized and where the three eldest (including me) had our first communion - was now a charter school. "Progress" is sometimes hard to take...

DeleteWow! Simone. That is cool, I just mentioned Mrs. Hyland to 2 school teachers sitting in my cafe, so I googled her. And here you mentioned her too! I moved away in mid-5th Grade, 1973. I had Mrs. Fazzio, Mrs. Hyland, Sr. Jean McGrory, St. Lucien, then Sr. Jeanne again! I think we are the same age. I think my 1st year there was ending June 1969. Both Sr. Jean and Sr. Bernadette were my angels, they even used to come to my dance recital! Great memories. I talk to Frank Scanga from my year, Veronica Santiago, and Danny Weynand. I remember Milagros Martinez, Ronald Etienne, Michele Polito, Nancy Rooney, Maureen Hauss, Aida ?, Linda Doran, the Collazo brothers. I remember those names so clear, very strange. My parents were married at St. Martin's I was baptized and made Communion there too. My heart still there. I even went to the Trift Shop once and got used Manolo Blaniks for $2.
