Holy Spirit, Borough Park

Holy Spirit church faces 17th Avenue at 46th Street in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn. The mailing address is 1712 45th Street, Brooklyn NY 11204, telephone 718-436-5565. It would seem that three languages predominate: English, Korean, and Spanish. The church is two blocks west of the Culver Line station (F train) at 18th Avenue.

The above photo shows the well-maintained garden and grotto, as seen from 17th Avenue. The church to the right of the sign. In the background can be seen a rectory that includes a chapel for weekday 8:30 a.m. Mass. Walkers may reach the chapel through this garden or along the driveway from 46th Street.

The parish school closed in 2004. The building was offered for lease in November, 2009. The parish bulletin lists the phone numbers of nearby St. Agatha School (718-435-3137) and that of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (718-492-2209).

  1. Hi Joe, My Grandparents were married in 1936 in this church but at the time it was known as The Church of the Holy Ghost. I am wondering if the building is the same one?

  3. I can’t believe the school closed! I lived in Brooklyn in my early years & went to school here from 2nd grade to 6th grade before we moved away. I have fond memories of all the sisters that taught me Love for the Lord, respect & honesty. I learned to pray in English thanks to all of them. The years I assisted were from 1980-1986. So I imagine all the Sisters are long gone. During that time Sister Sevillo was our Principal & Father Greene was our Parishiner. Good times.

  4. Dear Sir, Was the church built in 1921, or was it just the congregation that was founded then? And I'd like to know, does the church have many congregants in the area? I'm asking because I saw the church on July 12, when I visited America from Israel, where I live, and I was delighted to see that the majority population of Borough Park is open-minded enough to tolerate a church in the neighborhood, in stark contrast to their compatriots over here!

    1. Dave, I have the jubilee journal of the Church of the Holy Ghost, 1921 to 1946, with marvelous photos of the interior and of over 100 parishioners serving in the armed forces. Antoinette

  5. Are Brooklyn neighborhoods a melting pot or a stew? The demographics keep changing, as families keep moving in or out. Currently, a strong influence in Borough Park is the high birthrate of Bobov Orthodox.

  6. My parents were married in this church in 1952. I and my sister both received First Communion and were Confirmed here as well. Our family left New York in September, 1970. At that time, the church was still known as Holy Ghost.
