St. Catharine of Alexandria, Boro Park

St. Catharine of Alexandria Church is at Fort Hamilton Parkway and 41st Street in Boro Park. The mailing address is 1119 41st Street, Brooklyn NY 11218, telephone 718-436-5917. Clicking on any photo will enlarge it (to read the Mass schedule, for example).

The Lourdes grotto, above, is shown in a photograph taken through a fence separating this garden from Fort Hamilton Parkway.

Across the street is the older of two parish school buildings. There is no longer a parish school.

In the above photo, the rectory can be seen on 41st Street, to the right.

In the above photo, looking east on 41st Street, is the newer former parish school, now used by two public high schools. Its cross is covered. The adjacent building is a convent, then the church across Fort Hamilton Parkway. A contemporary description of Boro Park is given on Wikipedia here.

A September 2, 2019, article in Brooklyn Paper describes the demolishing of the school facing the church on Fort Hamilton Parkway. The city School Construction Authority may get this and adjacent parish property. Link HERE.

  1. when I was a kid in the early 50s I lived on 39th st. between fort Hamilton pkwy [11th ave.] and 12th ave. so I went to school and church there. looking at the pictures of the inside of the church made me sad. the big beautiful marble alter is gone what happened that made them change that to the drab ugly thing in the pictures. the craftsmen who built that original altar and that church are gone and with them the skills that it took to create it. WHY!!

    1. Hi, I just attended a Memorial Service at the church and noticed that two of the murals on either side of the alter have been updated. I'm trying to remember what was there before since I moved from the area over 30 years ago. However, I do recall a fire in the late 60's when I was in high school that did major destruction to the interior of the church and resulted in that beautiful marble alter being seriously and irreparably damaged. I don't remember details, but recall hearing that it was impossible to restore/recover.

  2. Tried to post a picture of the church right after the fire, showing the damage. I seem to recall hearing that a wax or polish that had been used on the old alter turned black with soot during the fire and dried to a hardened finish that was impossible to clean off.
