This is a work in progress, an attempt to use the label system to identify, describe, and sort the Catholic churches in Brooklyn, New York. To speed your search, please use the search box at top left, or peruse the labels on the right. Because newer posts are placed on top, a blog resembles a diary in reverse. Do not neglect the "Older posts" link at the bottom of each page. In many cases, clicking on a photo will enlarge it.

On reusing churches
The Atlantic Monthly website on 11.25.2018 published an essay by Jonathan Merritt, "America's Epidemic of Empty Churches." In the second paragraph he describes the conversion of the church of St. Vincent de Paul, Williamsburg, into apartments, with a one-bedroom unit renting as high as $4,812 per month. The article is worth reading, as it discusses the types of church conversions across our country.

St. Peter Catholic Academy, Bensonhurst
Again, those who write narratives for news on Channel 12 show ignorance of the neighborhoods of Brooklyn. St. Peter Catholic Academy is in Bensonhurst, not Gravesend.

The website of St. Peter Catholic Academy has a full history (linked HERE) explaining the role of this elementary school, now sponsored by three parishes: St. Mary Mary Mother of Jesus, St. Finbar, and St. Frances Cabrini. The address is 8401 23rd Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11214.

Holy Innocents, Beverly Road
This blog of mine is incomplete, as I have traveled to a mere 95% of Brooklyn's Catholic parishes and photographed them for posts. Today, December 28, 2017, the feast of the Holy Innocents, I could not find the parish of the Holy Innocents on this blog.
---
Brooklynites easily know where Beverly Road is, as it is a local station on the Brighton Line, currently served by the Q train. Holy Innocents church stands on the southeast corner of Beverly Road and East 17th Street, a few blocks east of the subway. The neighborhood is well-kept, picturesque.
---
The parish website is linked HERE. Masses and baptisms are in English, Spanish, and Creole.

An interesting loan and news item
The Real Deal real estate website describes an interesting loan from St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, to a charter school in Windsor Terrace. The loan was funneled through Rocklyn Ecclesiastical Corp., with offices adjacent to Holy Name church. To me, the word Rocklyn suggests holdings in the two Catholic diocese of Long Island: Rockville Centre and Brooklyn. When the diocese of Rockville Centre was created in erected in 1957, Brooklyn apparently retained ownership of some income-producing Suffolk County properties, including St. Charles Cemetery.
