Please see the article on the BKReader linked here. The church, designed by Patrick Keely, was built in 1856. Even after the merger with St. Lucy parish, it apparently had low attendance. Two hundred four apartments will be built in the church. A gym and a two-story garage will be built. The two closures in the borough of Brooklyn are Queen of the Rosary, Williamsburg, and St. Gregory the Great.
Queen of the Rosary Catholic Academy has occupied 11 Catherine Street (former St. Nicholas Commercial High School) in East Williamsburg for several years. The academy was Our Lady of Mount Carmel school "on the move."
In similar fashion, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy moved from its location on St. John's Place to the property of Holy Cross parish on Church Avenue a distance away.Joehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290657092471932129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-566721718695243721.post-87124605489916776092020-05-09T18:35:00.001-07:002020-05-09T18:59:38.233-07:00St. John the Baptist, Hart Street near Lewis AvenueI have yet to walk around the blocks where St. John's University and St. John's Prep began along both sides of Lewis Avenue. The large church of St. John the Baptist is to the east of Lewis Avenue. The neighboring parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel on Putnam Avenue has been merged into the parish of St. John the Baptist, one pastor covering worship at both churches. Two parish offices remain. Corrections and explanations are welcome.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">---
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In Bensonhurst, St. Athanasius, 61st Street, and St. Dominic, 75th Street, are merged, with the new pastor Msgr. David Cassato. The churches are a mile apart.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">---
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Holy Family, on Flatlands Avenue, Canarsie, is merged with St. Laurence, 1.25 mile further east on Flatlands Avenue, East New York. The pastor is Fr. Edward Kane.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">---
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">All Saints, Williamsburg, is merged with Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompei, a mile to the northeast. The pastor of All Saints, Fr. Vincenzo Cardilicchia, becomes pastor of the merged parish. He remains in ministry with the Neo-Catechumenal Way.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">---
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In Cypress Hills, Fr. Luis Laverde, pastor of Blessed Sacrament is now pastor of the merged parish of Blessed Sacrament and St. Sylvester. The two churches are less than a mile distant.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">---
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In Bath Beach, Fr. John Maduri, pastor of Most Precious Blood is now pastor of the merged parish of Most Precious Blood and Saints Simon and Jude, a mile northeast.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">---
As no churches are closed and the new merged parish often resembles what existed previously (regarding priestly staffing), maybe this news is rather minor. Instead of finding sixteen qualified pastors, the bishop now needs eight. Instead of sixteen accounts, there will be eight.Joehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290657092471932129noreply@blogger.com0
